Australian National Maritime Museum

Learn about the interconnectedness of land, sea and sky Country for First Nations people, and develop a deeper understanding of the richness and diversity of First Nations cultures.  

Through multi-sensory learning experiences, students will learn about First Nations peoples’ continuing connections with Country, Australia prior to colonisation and custodial management of land by First Nations Australians.  

In this interactive and hands-on program, students will: 

  • Handle a range of cultural objects and learn about their uses 
  • Tour the museum exhibitions with an expert guide 
  • Hear stories of First Nations knowledge from across Australia expressed through storytelling and art 

This cross-curricular program covers content from the History, Geography and Visual Arts curriculums.

Australian National Maritime Museum

This program introduces secondary students to the diversity of First Nations cultures and their continuing connections to Country by exploring examples of fishing and aquaculture technologies from across Australia throughout time. 

Students will closely examine cultural objects in the exhibitions to gain knowledge and insights about First Nations hunting tools, techniques, climates, species and management practices used in freshwater and saltwater areas of Australia.  

Students will apply their learning in a variety of hands-on activities by: 

  • Handling and viewing authentic cultural objects including fishhooks, eel traps, fishing nets and watercraft (nawi)  
  • Practicing traditional weaving techniques used to make fishing nets 
  • Building a model diorama of a tidal fish trap and explain the environmental conditions needed for it to work

Have your Early Childhood, Primary & High School groups engage with our Aboriginal educators on Bidjigal and Gadigal country of Centennial Parklands.

Learn about the natural environment and how it has been used by Australia’s First Nations Peoples from generation to generation. Discover how plants and natural materials are used by Aboriginal people for various purposes. Gain an insight into how Aboriginal people source natural materials from their surroundings.
