History Activity - Mabo Decision

In 1982, five Meriam people; Eddie Koiki Mabo, Reverend David Passi, Sam Passi, James Rice and Celuia Mapo Sale, challenged the State of Queensland and the Commonwealth of Australia to recognise that the Meriam people are the Traditional Owners of the Murray Islands in the Torres Strait. This legal battle became known as the Mabo Decision and is a significant turning point in Australian history.

This learning resource includes information about the Mabo Decision, including teaching and learning activities that you can incorporate into your secondary History program. This resource may be adapted for Legal Studies, Civics and Citizenship. This resource may be adapted for upper primary learners.
